DC Animal Shelter Makes Plea for Urgent Adoption of Pets

The Humane Rescue Alliance (HRA) in the District is calling on residents to immediately apply to adopt or foster dogs and other animals at its facility as it is running out of space.

The shelter’s urgent request comes after its adoption center and foster homes were filled to capacity.

Approximately 200 animals are currently available for adoption at the center, including cats, dogs, guinea pigs, mice, rabbits, and turtles.

“With our shelter over capacity and even more animals continuing to come through our doors, we wanted to extend a huge thank you to our staff for the lifesaving care and services they provide each and every day,” HRA said in a release.

Providing care for a great number of animals has been putting a strain on HRA’s animal care team, who are also “working tirelessly to help even more animals find loving homes.”

“Our foster team is placing as many animals in temporary homes as possible. Every time we send an animal to a foster home, it creates space for another animal who needs our help,” added the statement.

More than 200 animals arrive at the shelter every week.

HRA’s call coincides with the nationwide pet adoption campaign “Clear the Shelters,” which has been taking place annually for eight years and supported by NBC4 and Telemundo44.

This year’s “Clear the Shelters” is running from August 1 through August 31.

For dogs 30 pounds and over, applicants may choose the amount of the adoption fee throughout the month of August.

HRA will also hold an in-person adoption event on Saturday, August 27, during which adoption fees will be waived for all animals, including those in foster homes. Click here for more details.
