Four thousand beagles are in need of homes after concerns over animal care forced a Virginia-based dog breeding facility to close down.Those dogs have been shipped to different animal shelters nationwide.Fifteen of those beagles were brought in Friday night by the Pet Alliance of Greater Orlando. Animal care issues at the facility where the dogs were raised for medical research meant a scramble to find temporary homes with hopes to soon make those homes permanent.”Everybody does a little, then you solve the problem,” Executive Director Stephen Bardy said.Some are simply learning how to do dog things.”We’ve had them all out on grass probably for the first time, they’ve been walking on grass, getting them used to walking on leashes,” Bardy said. The folks at Pet Alliance say these dogs have spent their entire lives inside a cage, never having a home they can call their own. They’re hoping to change that very, very soon.”I’ve touched each one of them. I’ve played with all their faces. They’re all really sweet. Some are a little nervous, but most have never been in a home,” Bardy said. A local man who loves dogs wanted to find out about possible adoptions.”My little beagle is 17 years old, and she’s not going to be around long, and I had to have her daughter put down right here a few months ago,” Steven Bussard said.So when he heard beagles were landing, he jumped at the chance.”I’m just looking for a replacement and coming in here to rescue one is the best thing you can do for them, ” Bussard said. It may be a few days yet for those wanting a shot at adoption.”We’re in the process of vet checking them all, all the moms needed dental so we’re doing dental cleanings, making sure they’re de-wormed,” Bardy said. No heartworms in the group, so that’s good, meaning getting them ready takes less time. “It’s just good to be part of the solution, you don’t always get t o be part of the solution,” Bardy said. The 12 adult dogs range from 2 years old to seven, and there are three puppies. Adopting families need to know it’s a long commitment. We’ll update you when adoptions start.
